Dove Viral Draws Heat From Critics - Ad Age; November 26, 2007
"Dove's viral video attack on beauty advertising has produced a surprisingly strong and enduring blowback against Unilever from activists, newspaper op-ed writers, bloggers and videographers who see it as hypocritical coming from the same company that markets Axe. This Unilever parody has garnered 40,000 views...That, however, is the sort of distinction social media's transparency renders difficult, said Jim Nail, chief marketing and strategy officer for brand-monitoring firm Cymfony. "Only one in 100 people may know that Unilever owns both brands," he said. "But that one person is likely to be participating in social media..." FULL STORY

UK Companies See Social Networking as a Threat - CBR Online; November 22, 2007
"Instead of seeing the potential for recruitment or communication, human resources managers are more likely to discipline staff for time-wasting as they visit YouTube, MySpace, and Bebo in work hours...The response of 65% of UK firms to the social networking explosion was to simply to ban access outright, according to a survey of 300 UK HR decision-makers by security company Clearswift...But rather than impose a blanket ban on social networking sites, Penny Davis, head of HR operations at T-Mobile, said there is a real opportunity to use these sites for recruitment and other HR initiatives. Earlier this year, the mobile operator set up a Facebook group to engage with new graduates, and it plans to repeat and extend this for next year's intake..." FULL STORY

"Motorola Inc. said its venture capital arm, Motorola Ventures, would invest in Tilefile Ltd., which has developed a social-media platform. Terms were not disclosed...Leading handset companies such as Motorola clearly are moving beyond the hardware and software of handsets to become a more integral part of consumers’ lives. “Handset vendor” is losing its accuracy. And “social media”—the simple tag for the revenue-generating act of sharing video, pictures, music and links, much of it user-generated—appears destined to be a popular, sticky application...The Tilefile platform combines video, photos and audio into a single, content-neutral format called a “tile,” according to the two companies. The tile combines the media in question and the users interacting with it; tiles can be sent to others, uploaded to the Internet, etc..." FULL STORY
